【AI+9988】After the core backbone of Qianwen, Lin Junyang, left the company, Zhou Jingren took over the Qwen model's No. 1 position and was promoted to Alibaba partner last year
Alibaba (09988) The person responsible for the open-source large model Qianwen, Lin Junyang, suddenly resigned last week. According to internal media reports, Alibaba has made new management arrangements. Zhou Jingren, CTO of Alibaba Cloud and head of Tongyi Laboratory, will oversee the Qwen model position, while Liu Dayiheng, who is responsible for Qwen pre-training, will also oversee the post-training and coding teams.
The report states that Zhou Jingren joined Alibaba in 2015 from Microsoft (US: MSFT). He has led cutting-edge technology research and development at the Data Science and Technology Research Institute (iDST) and DAMO Academy, and has also been involved in practical business implementations at Ant and Taobao. By the end of 2022, Zhou Jingren became CTO of Alibaba Cloud and head of Tongyi Laboratory. By 2025, he was promoted to Alibaba partner.
Liu Dayiheng joined Alibaba DAMO Academy’s Language Technology Laboratory in 2021 and has been a core member since the early days of Qwen, responsible for pre-training. He was also selected for Huawei’s “Genius Youth” program in 2020.
After the management change of Qwen, Liu Dayiheng and other team leaders of the Qwen model report to Zhou Jingren.
Lin Junyang’s departure surprised the market, as he played an influential role in Alibaba’s AI transformation. He is a key driver behind the open-source large model series of Tongyi Qianwen and is a highly representative versatile talent in the industry.
Following his announcement of resignation, rumors circulated that the core team of the Qianwen model had collectively left and that there would be adjustments to the open-source strategy. Alibaba quickly issued a statement denying these rumors, stating that the Qianwen model team is stable, there is no “collective resignation,” and all products and services are operating normally. Qianwen will continue to adhere to its open-source strategy. The foundational model team has never set commercial KPIs such as DAU, and the goal of the Qwen large model is to continuously pursue the upper limits of model intelligence and achieve AGI.
