The Madrid Stock Exchange was established on September 10, 1831, through the Creation Law drafted by jurist Pedro Sainz de Andino. The first stock market operations began on October 20 of the same year, with banks, steel companies, and railway companies being the first traded securities.
The integration of the four Spanish exchanges into the SIBE occurred in 1995, and since 2001, its management has been handled by Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME).
