Lens V3 is coming soon: new chain, new features, GHO as gas Token.
Lens Mainnet and V3 new features are about to be launched
In the on-chain social space of Ethereum, Farcaster and Lens are two major social network projects. Currently, the daily active wallet count of Farcaster is about 4 times that of Lens, with Farcaster having approximately 1 million IDs and Lens having around 640,000 accounts.
It is worth noting that this data is based on the old Lens V2 system. Despite being in a transitional phase, the Lens project has still facilitated a considerable amount of activity. The Lens V3 protocol will be launched later this year on the new Lens Chain, which may bring a range of new innovations and opportunities to the Lens ecosystem.
Main Features of Lens V3
In November 2024, Lens launched version V3. This upgrade represents a significant leap compared to the previous version V2 on Polygon, by restructuring Lens's on-chain social interactions, supported by a more flexible and modular infrastructure.
An important change in V3 is that it will launch on a new customized Lens Chain. This is a second-layer network based on ZKsync, featuring Avail data availability, specifically designed for low-cost social trading.
V3 also introduces a range of new social features as building blocks for developers to use.
GHO as a gas token
In February 2025, Lens announced that it would use the decentralized stablecoin GHO as the native gas token for Lens Chain. This decision aims to bring more predictability and accessibility to transaction fees.
By using stablecoins, Lens V3 aims to keep transaction costs stable and simple. GHO will be integrated through ZKsync's shared bridge, becoming the main liquidity pool for Lens Chain users.
Data Migration Progress
In February 2025, Lens successfully migrated V2 data from Polygon to the V3 smart contract on the Lens Chain testnet. This migration involved over 125GB of data, including existing profiles, 28 million follower connections, 16 million posts, and 360 Lens applications.
Once the Lens Chain Mainnet is launched, users will not need to take any manual steps - their social graphs will remain intact, and popular applications such as Hey and Orb will be available from day one.
At the same time, the Lens team has begun phasing out the V2 protocol and the previous Momoka data solution, which will be replaced by Avail in V3.
Join the ZKsync Ecosystem
The Lens team recently submitted the ZIP-7 proposal to the ZKsync community governance, aiming to incorporate Lens Chain into the Elastic Network (the L2 interoperable ecosystem of ZKsync). This proposal is currently in the on-chain voting phase, which will end on March 10, 2025.
If the proposal is approved, it will pave the way for the launch of Lens V3, opening the next important chapter for the Lens community. With the Mainnet about to go live, Lens V3 is expected to bring new vitality and innovation to the on-chain social space.
