Peter Todd, The One Believed to Be Satoshi Nakamoto Criticizes Ripple: "I Told You 10 Years Ago"
Canadian Bitcoin developer Peter Todd, who was described as the most likely Satoshi Nakamoto in an HBO documentary, has reignited the debate about Ripple (XRP).
Peter Todd criticized Ripple after discovering a security vulnerability in the JavaScript library used for the XRP Ledger.
This security vulnerability was initially discovered by Aikido Security and acknowledged a few days ago by Ripple's Chief Technology Officer David Schwartz.
This incident occurred after malware was introduced into the official (NPM) package manager for XRPL; a move that could allow attackers to steal users' private keys and drain their wallets.
After the newly acknowledged loophole, Todd recalled that he had warned about such risks a decade ago.
At that time, Todd published an article criticizing Ripple for not verifying its code with cryptographic PGP signatures. Without this verification, an attacker could insert malicious code and distribute fake software, Todd argued. This is exactly the situation that is happening today.
"Ten years after I pointed out the risk of a Ripple backdoor due to Ripple not signing its software with PGP or providing any other way to obtain it securely... there is again a Ripple backdoor due to npm violations."
The debate sparked by Peter Todd reminds us of the importance of software supply chain security, especially in the field of cryptocurrency, where millions of dollars and user trust are at stake.
