Recently, there's been a pretty interesting phenomenon—people seem to be taking the metaverse games more seriously again. To be honest, the term "metaverse" does feel a bit outdated, but these games themselves are actually thriving quite well.
I've noticed that today's metaverse games are no longer the vague, intangible concepts they once were; they truly integrate gaming, social interaction, and economic activities, providing players with immersive online experiences. Established projects like Decentraland and The Sandbox have been doing their own thing, while new players like Otherside and Pudgy World are entering the scene with fresh ideas.
Among them, Otherside is developed by Yuga Labs (the team behind Bored Ape Yacht Club), combining MMO gameplay with blockchain technology, and currently mainly open to specific asset holders. Pudgy World is quite interesting—it uses a 3D browser game format to bring those popular Pudgy Penguins NFTs to life, allowing players to use their collectibles as in-game characters.
Decentraland remains a heavyweight in the metaverse space, where players can trade with the MANA token and own and develop their own virtual spaces. Illuvium, an open-world RPG, is also quite good; players catch creatures called Illuvials for PvP battles, using the native token ILV to drive the entire economy. The Sandbox has already become synonymous with metaverse gaming, especially in user-generated content and deep collaborations with major brands.
Honestly, this recent revival of metaverse games seems quite healthy—less hype and more focus on refining experiences and community. If you're interested in these kinds of projects, the assets of these mainstream metaverse games are tradable on Gate, so you can check out the market trends and project updates yourself.
