Fully homomorphic encryption: A new breakthrough in blockchain privacy computation
The Development and Application Prospects of Fully Homomorphic Encryption Technology
Cryptographic technology plays a key role in the advancement of human civilization, especially in the areas of information security and privacy protection. The combination of asymmetric encryption and hash functions facilitated the birth of Bitcoin, ushering in the blockchain era. With the development of the industry, cutting-edge technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and fully homomorphic encryption continue to emerge. Fully homomorphic encryption, as an important achievement in cryptography, allows for arbitrary computation on encrypted data, bringing new possibilities for privacy computing.
Fully Homomorphic Encryption(FHE) allows for unlimited computations and operations on ciphertext while maintaining the mathematical properties of the encrypted data. Companies like Microsoft and Zama provide open-source FHE libraries, offering convenience for developers. The basic process of FHE includes key generation, data encryption, homomorphic computation, and decryption of results. In the blockchain field, threshold multi-party computation schemes can enhance the security of FHE key management.
The fhEVM developed by Zama provides FHE support for Ethereum smart contracts. It integrates the FHE library through a set of precompiled contracts and designs a dedicated memory area to store FHE ciphertext. The Fhenix project combines fhEVM with Rollup technology to propose the FHE-Rollups solution. By introducing the Relay module, Fhenix also achieves cross-chain FHE functionality, allowing various blockchain networks to utilize FHE.
FHE technology has broad application prospects in areas such as gaming, DeFi, and AI. It can protect transaction privacy in gaming economies, prevent MEV attacks in DeFi, and safeguard personal data in AI training. The industry's recognition of FHE is continuously increasing, with several leaders including Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin expressing their support.
In addition to Zama and Fhenix, the FHE ecosystem also includes several noteworthy projects such as Sunscreen, Mind Network, and PADO Labs. Non-profit organizations like FHE.org are also promoting research and education on FHE. As the technology matures and the ecosystem develops, FHE is expected to bring more innovative applications in the future, injecting new vitality into the blockchain and Web3 fields.
