British media: Canada is exploring measures such as defense procurement and mineral alliances with the United States to ease Trump's tariff policy.
On January 15, according to the Financial Times, Canada's energy minister said that Canada is willing to buy more U.S. military equipment and establish a deeper alliance with the southern neighbor for critical minerals. Currently, the Canadian government is trying to persuade President-elect Donald Trump not to impose steep tariffs. Jonathan Wilkinson said Canada is eager to build a closer relationship with the U.S. to support the president-elect's priorities of strengthening U.S. energy independence and addressing global challenges. He said this could include the purchase of submarines and other military equipment, as well as the development of more critical mineral projects in Canada that would replace Asian products on the U.S. Supply Chain. But he also warned that Ottawa would respond with "-for-tat" measures if Trump, who will soon be sworn in as president of the United States, threatens to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods exported to the United States.
