The Ultimate Form of AI Assistants? Why Investors Put $11 Million Into This "Peek at Your Screen" AI Product?

Have you noticed that today’s AI assistants are actually pretty “dumb”? Every time I open ChatGPT or Claude, I have to re-explain the background. “I’m working on a project about…” “Our team just had a meeting discussing…” “Last week I sent an email about…” It takes me five minutes to craft prompts just to get a barely useful response. This doesn’t feel right. Isn’t AI supposed to make work easier? Why does it seem to add to our workload instead?

Recently, I tried a product called Littlebird, which just completed a $11 million seed round led by Lotus Studio. This experience made me rethink: what should an AI assistant really be like? It shouldn’t be a tool that constantly needs you to “feed” information. Instead, it should be an assistant that already understands your work and life—like a real assistant who doesn’t need you to explain your project background, team, and progress every time.

Alexander Green, the founder of Littlebird, said something during the funding announcement that I found very accurate: “Using computers is increasingly feeling like a struggle.” Every time we turn on our computers, we experience a dual stimulation of dopamine and fear. Computers should be “thinking bicycles,” but the business model of the internet has reconnected everything: if a product is free, you are the product; if you are the product, the goal is to harvest your attention. Bicycles are now pedaling us backwards. That metaphor is spot on. We should control our tools, but now the tools are controlling us.

Why do AI assistants always “forget”?

I’ve used various AI tools for over half a year—from ChatGPT to Claude, from Notion AI to specialized writing assistants. Each is powerful, but they all share the same problem: they have no idea who I am, what I’m working on, or what I care about. Every conversation feels like the first time we meet; I have to reintroduce myself, explain the background, and provide context.

For example, last week I was preparing for a product launch involving multiple departments. I had a meeting with the design team about visual concepts, another with marketing to finalize communication strategies, and a technical discussion about demo details. The notes from these meetings are scattered across different places: some in Notion, some in emails, some just spoken. When I want AI to help me compile a comprehensive launch plan, what do I do? I have to copy and paste all this information into the AI, craft a super-long prompt explaining each meeting’s content and decisions. Just preparing that prompt took me twenty minutes.

Even more absurd, when I want to revise the plan the next day, I have to do it all over again. Because AI doesn’t remember yesterday’s conversation—or even if it does, it doesn’t know that I discussed new directions with the CEO yesterday afternoon. This experience makes me feel that AI assistants aren’t helping me; they’re adding extra work. I have to do my original tasks and spend time “teaching” AI to understand my work.

A key insight from Littlebird’s team:

They realized that AI models are inherently powerful; what limits their usefulness isn’t the model’s capability but the lack of user data. Large language models know nothing about you, which fundamentally restricts their practicality. This sounds simple, but it hits the core issue directly. We’ve been talking about making models smarter, but we’ve overlooked a more basic question: how do we make models understand users?

Currently, many AI tools try to solve context problems. Some focus on searching your documents, others on meeting notes, some on email organization. But all these tools share a common limitation: they only see the information you actively give them. You have to upload documents, authorize access to your Gmail, or turn on meeting recording features during calls. All of these require users to do a lot of setup and maintenance. More importantly, these tools can’t see the full picture of your work. They might know your meeting content but not your Slack discussions afterward; they might know your emails but not what competitors you researched in your browser.

What makes Littlebird different: screen reading technology

Littlebird takes a completely different approach called “screen reading.” It reminds me of how human assistants work. A truly excellent assistant doesn’t need you to tell her every detail; she observes your work, remembers important things, and reminds you when needed. Littlebird is doing something similar.

Specifically, Littlebird is a Mac desktop app that continuously reads all text content on your screen. Notice: it “reads,” not “screenshots.” This distinction is crucial. Previous similar products, like Rewind (later renamed Limitless and acquired by Meta) and Microsoft’s Recall, work by constantly taking screenshots of your screen. This approach has several issues: enormous data volume because images are large; poor privacy since screenshots capture all visual info; bad search experience because extracting info from images is much harder than from text.

Littlebird’s method is smarter. It uses sophisticated screen reading tech to understand all application text content without any complicated setup. It can recognize who said what, when, and track your project progress in detail. Through this, it builds a rich understanding of your life: who matters to you, what projects you’re working on, what you care about this week and this year. Green, the founder, said in an interview that this approach makes data much lighter and less intrusive.

What I appreciate most about this design:

It respects the essence of software. The content on your screen is already text and structured data—why convert it into images and then back into text? Directly reading structured content is more efficient and accurate. From a privacy perspective, text data is far less sensitive than visual data. Your passwords might be masked with asterisks, your credit card numbers hidden, but screenshots would capture all those visual details.

Littlebird automatically ignores sensitive fields like passwords and credit card info in password managers and web forms. You can also customize which applications it should ignore. This gives users significant control. If you don’t want Littlebird to see your work in certain apps—like private chat software or financial tools—you can easily exclude them.

Besides passive screen reading, Littlebird can actively connect to other apps. You can choose to link Gmail, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Reminders, etc. This allows it to understand your work and life more comprehensively. It not only knows what’s happening on your screen but also your schedule, to-do lists, and emails.

What does full-context AI mean?

When AI truly has your complete context, the user experience changes dramatically. Seeing some scenarios enabled by Littlebird made me realize this isn’t just incremental improvement but a whole new interaction paradigm.

The basic function is answering questions. But unlike other AI tools, Littlebird’s responses are based on a deep understanding of your work. You can ask, “What did I do today?” or “Which emails are important to me?” After a few days of use, these preset prompts become more personalized. It’s fascinating because AI begins to learn what you care about and your work patterns.

Green shared his own experience: he asks Littlebird daily, “What’s important this week?” or “What should I focus on?” and often gets surprisingly thoughtful answers. He uses it for professional advice, filling gaps in his technical knowledge, and even planning dinners. These use cases are diverse, but the common point is: AI provides insightful answers because it deeply understands your life.

Littlebird has a built-in meeting note feature similar to Granola, running system audio in the background, capturing transcriptions, and creating notes and action items based on content. This isn’t new—many meeting tools exist—but Littlebird’s uniqueness is that it connects meetings with your other work contexts.

My favorite feature: “Prep for meeting”

When you open a detailed view of a meeting, there’s an option for Littlebird to prepare for it. It considers past meeting context, related emails, and company history to give you more details. It even fetches info from sources like Reddit, showing user opinions on specific products or companies. Imagine you’re about to meet a client; Littlebird automatically summarizes: what you discussed last time, recent email exchanges, recent company news, user feedback. It’s like having a real assistant helping you prep.

Another feature I find practical is “Routines.” It lets you create detailed prompts for Littlebird to run at fixed intervals—daily, weekly, monthly. The company provides some ready-made routines, like daily briefs, weekly summaries, or yesterday’s work review. Users can also create custom routines with personalized instructions. I think this solves a real problem: we all know we should review and summarize our work regularly, but few stick to it. With Routines, AI proactively helps you do that.

Internal surveys by the Littlebird team show the real value of full-context AI: 84% of users report saving at least half a day weekly, and 80% say it reduces their daily work anxiety. Both are compelling. Saving time is understandable—you don’t need to spend as much on organizing info, searching for documents, or recalling details. But reducing anxiety is even more profound. Many work-related anxieties come from worries about missing important info, forgetting key tasks, or being unable to respond promptly. Knowing an AI is tracking all this naturally eases those worries.

Balancing privacy and control

When I learned that Littlebird continuously reads everything on my screen, my first reaction was: is this safe? Could my privacy be compromised? These concerns are entirely valid. If an app observes your entire digital workday, trust is everything.

Littlebird’s design philosophy is “default private, secure, and user-controlled.” Technically, they’ve implemented several measures: all data is encrypted with AES-256, transmitted via TLS 1.3. User data is never used to train AI models. These are basic but critical security steps.

More importantly, users have control. You can pause data collection at any time, exclude specific apps or websites, or delete any data with a single click. This design keeps users in charge of their information. If you’re handling particularly sensitive content, you can temporarily suspend Littlebird; if certain apps should never be monitored, you can blacklist them.

Green explained in an interview why they chose cloud storage over local storage: to run powerful models for various AI workflows, local storage isn’t feasible. It’s an interesting trade-off. Local storage is obviously safer because data stays on your device, but cloud storage allows using more advanced AI models and providing better features. Littlebird chose the latter, with strong encryption and strict privacy policies to mitigate risks.

I noticed Littlebird has achieved SOC 2 certification and fully complies with GDPR and CCPA regulations. These certifications are no small feat, especially for a startup. They show the team prioritized security and privacy from the start, not as an afterthought.

Another important detail: Littlebird only stores text, not visual information. This makes data lighter and greatly reduces intrusiveness. Green mentioned that this might be one reason Recall and Rewind faced difficulties—the volume of screenshot data is huge. Screenshots are indeed more invasive. Imagine browsing personal photos or videos; screenshots would capture all visual details. Text records only descriptive content, not images.

This design makes me think of a broader question: how much do we want AI to know about us? Complete transparency offers maximum convenience but also maximum risk. Littlebird’s approach is to let users decide that boundary. You can let it see everything or restrict its access strictly. This flexibility is crucial because different people and scenarios have varying privacy needs.

Implications for AI products

Littlebird’s story made me reconsider how AI products should be built. I see this product embodying several key principles worth pondering for all AI developers.

First is the importance of context. Rachitsky, an investor, said something I strongly agree with: “The quality of AI depends on the context it has, and it knows too little about your day.” This highlights a core issue in current AI products. We keep optimizing models and algorithms but overlook a fundamental fact: no matter how smart an AI is, if it doesn’t understand the user’s specific situation, it can’t give truly useful answers.

This reminds me of a past misconception in AI development. Many teams build complex RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) systems, trying to give AI access to various data sources. That’s not wrong, but the approach might be flawed. Instead of forcing users to upload documents or authorize access to multiple apps, why not let AI observe the user’s work passively? Littlebird’s screen reading is essentially a passive but comprehensive context collection method—more effective than scattered, active connections.

Second is the importance of identifying killer use cases. Rachitsky said that long-term success depends on finding that essential scenario. Many teams have already identified their core use case and are focusing on those emerging applications. This is very practical. Building AI products often falls into the trap of trying to be a “jack-of-all-trades”—doing everything but not excelling at anything.

He also shared a product development philosophy: “You won’t really know how people will use your product until you launch it. The strategy is to release early, see how people use it, and then double down on those use cases, rather than trying to plan everything perfectly beforehand.” This is quite different from traditional software development, which emphasizes planning, designing, and polishing before release. AI products are more like ongoing experiments because their capabilities are fuzzy, and users will discover unexpected ways to use them.

Feedback from investors shows that different users find very different applications. Russ Heddleston, CEO of DocSend, said he rewrote his company’s marketing site using context from meetings, emails, and Notion. Gokul Rajaram, former product lead at Google and Facebook, said the product eliminated friction in memory, retrieval, and reinterpretation of work. Rachitsky mentioned asking the tool how to improve productivity and happiness.

These diverse scenarios—from writing marketing copy to personal productivity—are all based on one core capability: AI’s deep understanding of the user. This validates Littlebird’s core hypothesis: when AI truly understands your context, applications will naturally emerge without the product team having to predefine every feature.

Third is the subtlety of product positioning. Littlebird positions itself as “the quiet future of computers.” Poetic, yes, but accurate. Most AI products today compete for your attention—pop-up notifications, push alerts, trying to keep you engaged. Littlebird’s philosophy is to work in the background, only appearing when needed. This “quiet” trait might be an inherent feature of full-context AI. If an AI truly understands you, it doesn’t need to constantly interrupt to gather information; it can silently learn and prepare in the background.

Currently, Littlebird’s business model is free, with premium features starting at $20/month. I think this is reasonable given the value it offers. If it really saves half a day weekly, $20 a month is a worthwhile investment. I’m more curious about how the business model might evolve—enterprise versions, team collaboration features, etc.

My thoughts on the future

After experiencing Littlebird’s concept, I started pondering a bigger question: what should future AI assistants look like?

I believe we are transitioning from “tool-based AI” to “partner-based AI.” Tool AI, like ChatGPT now, is something you open when needed and close afterward—each session starts fresh. Partner AI, like Littlebird, is always by your side, understanding your work and life, proactively helping. This isn’t about capability differences but about relationship.

This shift could bring interesting changes. For example, we might need fewer specialized AI tools. Currently, there are many: writing assistants, coding helpers, data analysis tools, meeting aides. But if one AI truly understands all your work, it could provide consistent help across different scenarios without switching between multiple tools.

Another change is that prompt engineering might become less critical. Now, we spend a lot of time learning how to craft good prompts, provide enough context, and guide AI to get desired answers. But if AI already has enough context, maybe we only need to express our intentions simply. Like communicating with a human assistant—you don’t need to explain everything every time because she already knows.

However, full-context AI also introduces new challenges. One is psychological adaptation. Knowing an AI is constantly observing your work might feel uncomfortable—even if you rationally trust it. It’s similar to knowing a colleague is watching your screen. We’ll need time to get used to this new work relationship.

Another challenge is dependency. If you get used to AI remembering everything, organizing all info, and preparing meetings, will your own memory and organizational skills decline? It’s like how reliance on GPS has dulled many people’s sense of direction. Will AI assistants cause similar effects?

From an industry perspective, Littlebird represents a new product category: not just meeting notes or document search, but “full-context AI assistants.” The core features are continuous observation, comprehensive understanding, and proactive service. I predict more companies will enter this space, competing on how complete their context collection is, how accurately their AI understands, and how well they protect privacy.

Littlebird’s $11 million funding is just the beginning. The investors include notable figures from product, design, and content fields—many are heavy users themselves, providing feedback and scenarios. This investor structure might be more valuable than funding alone for an AI product that requires constant iteration and scenario discovery.

I look forward to Littlebird’s future developments. Will it expand to Windows and other platforms? Will it offer enterprise versions for team sharing? Will it develop new features we can’t even imagine now? Most importantly, can it find that killer use case—something that makes people say, “I can’t work without it”?

Green said during the funding announcement: “Is it possible to build an AI that truly understands you? We believe so, and we want to show you.” That’s both a promise and a challenge. Littlebird is still early, still evolving—a continuous research project. It won’t always capture every detail perfectly; sometimes it’ll miss colleagues on vacation or projects already completed. But you’ll be amazed at how deeply it understands you.

I believe full-context AI is the future—not because of flashy technology, but because that’s what AI should be. Its promise is to make us more efficient, focused, and creative. But if AI requires a lot of manual input and maintenance, it breaks that promise. Only when AI truly understands and adapts to us can it become the “thinking bicycle” that helps us ride faster and farther.
